Waverley Permit Protest

This Gripe has been written to let Waverley Residents know that parking permit conditions have changed.

You may not know this has happend already unless you go to Waverley council and renew any exsisting permit. Some of the changes that have been made are that we now have to pay for the first permit to park our car outside our own house. A fee of $25.00 has been introduced. If you have a second car there has been a whopping increase of $48 you will now have to pay $100 instead of $52. There has also been other changes to visitors parking.

As a resident of Waverley Council should I be punished because I don't have off street parking??????

Many residents of our street would love to have off street parking. Imagine coming home on a Saturday or Sunday or any day of the week and being able to park in our own off street parking, that would be wonderful!! Sadly we are not aloud to have off street parking so on a lovely Saturday or Sunday morning, afternoon and evening we may not even be able to park outside our house, and in somedays not even in our street. We are provided from Waverley Council with a parking permit but this does not guarantee us a park. So yes I think we definetly should be punished for not having off street parking!!! after all it is a privelage to park outside you house in this area!!!! I have to carry sleeping children, bags of groceries, getting wet in the rain!!!! But I don't complain alot about it because I know that this is a part of living in this location. If the council could guarantee me resident parking outside my house then maybe I wouldn't mind paying for a car space, but this is not the case. If they would approve off street parking even better. To pay to park outside you house for a parking space that does not exsist, I will complain about. Residents need to fight council on this asap. An increase of $25 for the first car parking permit were previously it was free and the second is now $100 instead of $52.00.

No residents have been given any say in this matter. Please contact members of council direct on this matter, we all need to agitate council on this matter. A list of emails and numbers can be found on www.waverley.nsw.gov.au website, please forward any emails sent to councillers to waverleypermitprotest@live.com.au so they can be taken to a meeting with waverley council.

Thanks

Would you like to be interviewed for UTS Reportage about the parking permit costs?

As I outlined on a similar gripe on this site, Council has recently completed its review of the public parking system. As expected there has been much community discussion about the review particularly regarding the reinstatement of the fee for residential parking permits.

The aim of the parking review was to find a way for residents and visitors to share the very limited public parking that exists in Waverley. With vehicle registration increasing dramatically, now on average each household has more than one car, and with visitors also increasing dramatically, parking stress is a major issue that needs to be addressed.

At the 2008 NSW local government elections, I made a commitment to review our parking system to make it fairer and more sustainable. The review committee was made up of myself, Councillors from each party, our independent Councillor and technical experts. Our overall aim for the system is to protect our residents, encourage higher turnover for businesses and provide spaces for visitors.

With more parking stickers being issued than actual parking spaces in nine out of the 22 resident parking zones, one of the areas being over subscribed by more than a third, and five other areas almost on par - many residents are demanding we regulate these areas to ensure visitors do not park out these streets all day. The resident parking system helps increase visitor turnover and makes these spaces available for residents.

For the past two years the first permit was free, but there is now a small fee of $25 a year for the first vehicle where there is no existing garage. I know it is difficult to pay for something when it has been free but the $25 does not cover the actually cost of the system.

The decision to charge for the resident parking sticker was publicised as part of our Management Plan which was widely circulated to the community. As part of this process, we had a number of discussions with a range of residents who generally accepted that this fee was a small price to pay if it helped them park closer to their home.

We will continue to further consult with our community on this issue in the future.

But to pay for parking 'outside the house' and not actually get it is the concern.
