Parking Inspectors on Hall st
My friend got a ticket today on Hall st re: not leaving one metre between her car and the one behind it! WTF? Ever heard of this? Waverly Council you are kidding! Did you say revenue raising?
Why was the fine issued? Because the owner of the expensive bmw parked behind it demanded that the parking inspector write a ticket...So i went for a walk in hall st, many, many cars have less than a metre between them because you try and get a park anywhere you can, you might be close at the front but check that the car has bit of space behind it and they can get out(as was the case mentioned above) Under this comlaint box it says "provide a possible solution if you have one"
HERE'S A SOLUTION YOU MONEY HUNGRY BASTARDS: a)why don't issue a warning as certain OTHER councils tend to do perhaps stating"hi you have parked too close to the car behind you, this is a warning, next time you may be fined"
If waverly council do read these "gripes", then instruct your employees properly, less than a metre, be consistent, fine everyone not just some poor soul who only receieved a fine because the parking inspector was being intimidated by a rich south african driving an expensive bmw! i await council's response but i'm not holding my breath

1 metre sounds a lot.
Is this rule in writing?
Is it in the street signs?
Never heard of this one.
I think youll find the mayor Sally Betts reads this site.
Our parking inspectors can not issue a fine for "not leaving one metre between her car and the one behind it" as there is no such infringement type. The infringement was most likely for overstaying the meter or not purchasing a ticket from the meter.
If your friend would like to have the infringement reviewed they need to provide us with the Penalty Infringement Number and/or vehicle registration. We can review the infringement and provide clarification on why it was issued. Also, if appropriate we will discuss the necessary steps to help resolve this issue.
Please send details of the infringement to:
Divisional Manager, Parking Services
Waverley Council
parking admin@waverley.nsw.gov.au
Thanks,
Cr Sally Betts
Waverley Mayor
Fancy a job at Woollahra Sally.
We could do with someone who takes an interest.
Nice to see you at the Dawn service.
Fancy a job at City of Sydney?!
Hi,
i posted the original gripe, ticket was definately issued for the above reason.
I had a discussion with the officer who wrote the ticket, i then asked him if he had issued an infringement notice for the the car on the other side, he told me it was none of my business and that he couldn't tell me if he did or didn't.After a 20 minute conversation which i raised the point that in all my life i had never heard of this type of infringement, he said it exists but he had to look up the code... Basically he issued the ticket under pressure from another person. So we will see what happens..
My friend no longer has the original ticket, so when it arrives in the mail she will take it further and contact the Divisional mananger as has been suggested.
I will keep everyone informed of what transpires as i'm sure people are sick of this type of revenue raising.
This site will grow and grow and i thank the person who started this site very much.Venting on this site works.
That's what rubber bumper bars were created for!
In Paris it is standard practice for cars to gently nudge the car in front or behind in order to fit into a space, when entering or leaving! We'll be doing that too soon with the lack of parking and excess of cars in Sydney!
This is a great response from the Mayor of Waverley.Good on ya Sally.
Why oh why cant we get this from the Woollahra council and or Mayor.
Time for the Wentworth courier or Central to get in on this.
Although the web is getting bigger and better, we could do with the back up of the Newspapers.
Cr Sally Betts, best you sack your advisor. The fine attracts a Penalty (on the Spot) of $81. (see below for the legislation).
P.S - If you comment without the facts, City of Sydney don't want you!!
Road Rules 2008
Part 12Division 8Rule 208
208 Parallel parking on a road (except in a median strip parking area)
(1) A driver who parks on a road (except in a median strip parking area) must position the driver’s vehicle in accordance with subrules (2) to (8).
(2) The driver must position the vehicle to face:
(a) in the direction of travel of vehicles in the marked lane or line of traffic on, or next to, the part of the road where the driver parks, or
(b) if there is no traffic on, or next to, that part of the road—in the direction in which vehicles could lawfully travel on that part of the road.
(3) If the road is a two-way road, the driver must position the vehicle parallel, and as near as practicable, to the far left side of the road.
(4) If the road is a one-way road, the driver must position the vehicle parallel, and as near as practicable, to the far left or far right side of the road, unless otherwise indicated by information on or with a parking control sign.
(5) If the driver does not park in a parking bay, the driver must position the vehicle at least 1 metre from the closest point of any vehicle in front of it and any vehicle behind it.
So after someone has dug out the fine print. it is a rule...but who knows this? NO-ONE! in all fairness you would issue a warning surely... discretion is another word that springs to mind...
Adam,
There are plenty of little zingers like this all through the Road Rules. At the end of the day, I wouldn't use them unless I felt it was called for (NB- Don't get smart with a Parking Officer who knows his job). From the authors original comments, I myself would not issue the notice, but we have only heard one side of the story.
I'd fight the ticket. Its a dodgy ticket. Who's to say who parked first therefore who's parked second to commit the offence! The officer would have to witness the event occuring, or go of a stat dec from a witness. If the officer witnessed the offence, why didn't they speak to the motorist and have them at least have the option of rectifying the offence.
I think Sally Betts shows compassion and a sense of community, something maybe the Real Parking Officer may not understand.
She may be unaware and quite rightly would question whether this rule is correct.I was and can understand the gripe that was posted.
I did see a parking officer buying christmas cards once... which I admit honestly , I was very surprised.
You The real Parking officers seems like a decent person.
Can I ask the Real Parking officer a couple of questions..
Did you go to the Dawn service.
Did you contribute to the Bush fire appeal.
I simply ask this as I am trying to understand what sort of people do this type of work??
I saw a girl in tears 7.30 am once on Commonwealth st asking for pity from an officer....poor girl.
I will be the first to admit that some parking officers do see things as a bit to black and white. I will also admit this is a problem at times. I'd like to think I have a good sense of what is right and what is wrong and what it means to give someone a fair go.
Why would you be surprised to see a parking officer by a christmas card? Are you that keen to stereotype and pigeon hole people? I do come to work and do my job, and then switch off. I don't take mental notes and ring up the local council to complain about the clown in the 4wd parked on top of the school crossing while I pick up my neice, the day is over.
At the end of the day, councils have deemed the role of a parking officer as a needed role. They deem that there needs to be some underlying force to ensure public safety is maintained, that traffic flow continues, and that all visitors to busy streets have a chance to utalise highly contested parking spots. people are quick to have a shot at parking officers, but consider the flip side.... You drive to work, but it takes an extra half an hour as people are parking in clearways disrupting traffic flow, you get to work and have to negotiate the scooter parked on the footpath right outside the office door, you duck out for lunch up to the takeaway, but there is no where to park as people are parking in the same spot all day, you go home but can't even get in your own drive as a halfwit has parked right across your driveway.
Like I said at the end of the day it is a job to me and it is paying the bills. I get paid the same if I issue one ticket or fifty tickets.
Did you also consider that if everyone parked legally.....there would be no parking officers?
As for the dawn service, i attended the one at my local RSL as my grandfather served in the war. I also have a weekly deduction set up through my work place for victoria that runs until june. You?
PS notice How the real Parking officers says sack the advisors.
I think that says it all.
I rest my case.
LOL
Reply to Real P O
Yep and Yep.
We just need a society who cares a little more and is a little more understanding of people. So when someone gets a parking fine for parking too close to some else is pretty weird.
Lets say you as a Parking officer comes across this..how do you work out who parked first etc and who should get a ticket, its pretty bizarre.
I saw another post re Work zone parking, Council get the money for a residents sticker and the poor sod gets a change of signs and a ticket.
I dont think we are saying do away with Parking rules but come on mate do we really need all these meters everywhere
You cant park anywhere and if you do you have to pay heaps or you have an hour.
You and councils are basically forcing us to go to Westfields where we get 3 hours free.
Parking! Bah humbug!!
Parking is a contentious issue in all local government areas in Sydney... it's contentious all over the world, in fact. In Paris, where I am now, the city is deliberately and aggressively pushing back on cars in the city. Roads are being narrowed, and parking spots abolished. The message is getting through: don't drive into Paris!!
I don't own a car myself, and I have never taken advantage of any residents parking scheme in the 20 years I have lived in Bondi, but when friends come to visit by car, they have to feed parking meters for the privilege.
I recently paid $200 p.a. for a card that allows three pre-registered cars to park free, but only one at a time. This seems nuts, but it is cheaper than the parking fines that might be incurred otherwise, and I pay instead of my friends.
The fact is that there are simply too many cars for the roads to cope with. Cars are so cheap now that every family seems to have one or two or even three. Where to leave them?
Cars, whether moving or not, simply take up a lot of space on the planet, but even the best used cars are idle for most of the time.
The price of new houses has become inflated because the houses now have a room (the garage) that houses two or even three cars.
Some people suggest that parking is so scarce that, just as you're required to prove that you are a suitable person to adopt a baby, you might soon have to show that you have a place to keep a car before you'd be allowed to own one.
Parking? That's not the issue: it's CARS that are the problem. Parking is just a symptom.
Congratulations are due to Cr Sally Betts, Waverley Council and the Real Parking Officer on taking this site seriously and responsibly.
Attempts, discussions and somewhat of a resolution.
Excellent work hopefully you guys keep it up.
I live in Marine Parade, Watsons Bay,..where the parking is free for all as long as you want.
So when a resident goes out for ten minutes,...comes back,..they are forced to wait anywhere up to 20 mins or even longer for a parking space to become available.
And then we are forced to park up on the kerb outside our apartment block that has only one space that is already occupied by a tenants car.
Councils answer to this is to make money to the tune of $84 per day in fines out of me and other residents of Marine Parade in after they are the ones refusing to provide resident permits.
So while everyone else gets to park as long as they like there all day for free,.... the residents pay $84 perday in fines cause of forced kirb side parking.
Wheres the Justice?
And further,....the next day they then fine me for parking backend in instead of nose end in, yet no one can even tell me why the signs are there in the first place.
Every resident in the street in question believe that parking backend in first is far safer then noseend in first because when you leave, your backing out onto moving traffic and people walking down the middle of the road(as they do) and have no chance of seeing whos comming because the car beside you is obstructing vison till your almost out of the spot leave you in a position of having to use luck instead of good ole fashon visual awareness
Backend first means you dont even move your car till you can see it's DEFINANTLY clear no guessing if someone or something is there!!!!!
I believe there is no other reason for this sign other than revinue raising.
And Further,..
when I actually asked the parking officer why he was issuing me a ticket and that I wished to fix what ever he was tryen to fine me for, as I believe we have the option of moving the vehicle or rectifing the situation, he tottally ignored me.
Wonder why they get the crap beaten out of them?????? Theres the perfect example.
Somehow,...I can see a whole lot of extreamly injured parking officers and a long line of normally law-abiding citizens in court for gravious bodly harm in 2010.
And personly I feel extreamly sorry for the poor man or woman in court on charges. and feel absolutly no empathy what-so-ever for parking officers getting assulted on the job.
Having had dealings with Mahmud Swalah-McDahrou personally, I can't for the life of me understand how he only got a broken leg and a couple of cuuts,....That parking officer has one of the worst attitudes I have ever experienced and it was because of this I remembered him emmediately from Ultimo when I saw his pathetic picture in the paper. All I could think was,..HE HAD IT COMMIN BIGTIME!!!!!!.
Personally I reckon enough of it happens THEN maybe the courts might start to see a pattern and realise that the councill and parking officers in particular are antagonising people beyond belief.
Will keep you posted as to wether the court agree's.
P.s: Merry Christmas Woollahra Council & Cr Andrew Petrie (Yes I am being extreamly sarcastic)
That happened to me.. I sent them photos of how I was parked... and they still made me pay...
It's really shit.
