Nature Strip Neglect in Bondi Junction
I would like the council to make it clear who is to maintain the nature strip & trees out the front of our house in the Bondi Junction/Queens Park area.
The lack of consistency in maintenance means that the streets are always looking shabby. In my strip most of us have spruced up our nature strip & maintain (mow!) our part of the strip but our hard work is spoiled by the parts that are not maintained at all. Also often it is hard to walk along the foot path due to tree overhang, and many have grown tall enough to touch the front of the houses & power lines.
Maybe a regular monthly or bi-monthly date for council up-keep could be the solution or otherwise a letter to households making it clear what we should do to keep our streets beautiful & encourage front of house pride!

Waverley Council, what is the purpose of a nature strip, to me it is nothing more than a DOG TOILET for those dog owners and then me who has to walk through the nature strip at night, in the dark, in the rain only to tread on some dog poo and leave a dirty smelly trail on my carpet for others to smell and have to clean the next day, remember your charter, we the Rate Payers we pay you money for the upkeep of our streets, you take the money and go on a holiday. I hope the Ombudsman reads this because there will be so much content on this site that it will take someone a long time to read all the complaints. Waverley Council,, you are not doing your job, at the next election, who do we vote for, who is left, who has enough backbone to do the jobs you are paid to do, Number 1 CLEAN THE STREETS, THE TREES, THE LITTER FROM RENTAL PROPERTIES THAT GET DUMPED ON THE STREET, you know the rest... You are on notice, DO YOUR JOB.
About five years ago Waverley Council stopped maintaining nature strips on all but main roads, and for people who are entitled to disabled car passes. This is ok if you can do it yourself, but if you can't or your neighbours are messy or couldn't be bothered then it doesn't take much for your street to deteriorate, and once it gets bad it then gets worse. Waverley council thinks the mess will prompt streets to band together for working bees or paying a contractor to do it - I thought that was what local councils were for.
I suggest the Council pre-approve some contractors and publish the resource on its website so we can order a clean up for the street in the same way as we can ask the council to collect excess rubbish for a fee.
With regard to mowing nature strips, Council's policy is the following:
Generally it is the resident's responsibility to look after the nature strip outside their home.
Council does mow main thouroughfares such as Carrington Road and Old South Head Road at least four times a year. We also do hard to access places such as the split level bank on Francis Street.
Special need residents (ie frail aged) can apply to Council to maintain their nature strips.
Council has a range of programs to help foster civc pride such as encouraging planting footpath gardens and pockets parks. Visit www.waverley.nsw.gov.au/council/parks/parks/footpath.asp
Cr Sally Betts
Mayor
Cr Sally Betts, are you serious about your policy of the residents mowing their nature strips outside their homes, who will provide the lawn mower, who will rake up the clippings and who will pay for disposal, i charge $200 per hour for my time, am i now working for Waverley Council for free. Therefore are you telling me i own the nature strip in front of my house for if that's so can i turn it into my own private car space, i need it more than i need overgrown weeds, you can't be serious, have you forgotten that i pay rates? What is my money for anyway, so can i apply to concrete the nature strip and paint it green, i would like to see the looks on the dogs face when it tries to do it's business in front of my house. CONCRETE IS GOOD. I WANT CONCRETE.
What a selfish and narrow-sighted attitude. You live in and are part of a community! The boundaries of you world don't stop at your front gate. Take some responsibility for where you live. Maintaining a nature is hardly a major effort.
I agree with you Jim, hell, my nature strip is 80 mts long, all cut by pushmower, does this resident not have a mower, then a reasonable cause for complaint, I also planted crepe-myrtles, 3 of, improved drainage at my expense because I was proud of my home, I charge $12 to do a pensioners home, front and back 1 an half to 2 hours a day, mr resident of Bondi Junction, try giving a little extra to some-one else rather than me me me.
Why do ppl pay rates, for the upkeep of the libaries, community halls,lighting--roads,parks,buildings,gardens, parks, reserves, sports fields, town halls, meals-on-wheels,if a beach present, life-guards, community, roads, bridges,water-pipes, gas-pipes,sewage-pipes,did you know the old DMR looked after ALL roads but about 30 odd yrs ago the RTA gave ALL councils in NSW the responsibility of upkeeping the roads in their boundaries, so, saving a fortune in costs to the RTA,
Between Dungog, Great Lakes and Gloucester Councils they have 45% of all wooden-bridges in NSW,which in todays terms equals $84 million dollars to upgrade or fix, so where do you whingers think where the monies coming from, the poor b####y rate-payers. You city ppl have never had it so good, all these services and still whinge about it,get a life.
This makes me laugh we almost got a fine from council because we beautified our nature strip ( with new grass and small lillies against our brick wall) when we finished renovating. The ranger said get rid of it or you will be fined, we had to then take photo's of the work (and I took photo's of all the other un kept strips on our street along) and lodge a freakin form...then they had to review and approve.
Btw no tripping hazzard like some strips...
i mow the nature strips outside 5 homes on carrington rd and birrell st the other day i was asked to cut down tree branches to make it easier to trample the nature stip to dust why would you bother to keep your area nice when council allows most of the area to be over run with weeds and litter
