Waverley Market in Bondi Junction Mall is too Run Down

We have been walking past the Bondi Junction mall market for years and was absolutely shocked to see that a council has allowed this Market to run down like it looks now.
We walk past everyday and found the market empty. On Friday I expected some of the stalls selling different types of jewellery from around the world and other products that we came to look at and buy have all gone.
We came on the Saturdays and found some fresh food and a few other types of food but nothing else.
Some one told us that the market is being run by a new operator. The market looked empty and not inviting for the locals.

This Market used to be run by the Organic Markets people, it was a great market had loads of atmosphere and everybody liked it and i cant understand why they change the management particularly as they did such a good job... we say they should probably get the old people back to run it ASAP! lets lobby for that!

I heard the council was now managing the Bondi Junction Friday market. What a shock today to see the nice market that used to be there is now a bunch of rags! What a disappointment to see how the market has gone down so drastically!

the organic food market folks got the sack from the local council. That is one thing but the fact that about 50 people, the traiders, lost their job, income and contact with the local community is another.Well done Waverley council.

Firstly, Waverley Council is not directly managing the markets. Every five (5) years council calls for tenders to operate the markets.

In April this year, after a long tendering process, the operation of the Oxford Street Mall markets was awarded to a company called, ‘Your Local Markets’, run by Lisa Martin who has been a resident of Waverley for over 15 years. To mark this change in management the markets were renamed ‘Bondi Junction Village Markets’.

Lisa officially took over the markets on May 20, so please give her and her team time for things to settle and we've had torrential rain for the first three weeks of operation.

The new market operator is seeking stall holders that will bring produce direct from the growers to the markets, with seasonal produce, fresh free-range food and a commitment to sustainability. The Artisans market is focusing on new designer ranges including fashion, accessories and lifestyle.

I visited the markets last Saturday (12 June) and was very impressed by the range of organic and specialty items for sale. I found the store holders and their staff extremely helpful and knowledgeable of their produce. With respect to atmosphere and crowds, I found the markets well attended, despite it being a long-weekend and the beginning of the snow season, traditionally a time when take off to escape south.

No one seems very happy about the changes at Bondi Junction Market, but I just wonder how the Council's due diligence could have missed the fact that they were awarding it to an operator who was operating without consents in Queensland - see http://www.mygc.com.au/article/news/local-newsroom/29689-cloud-over-pbc-...

Very sloppy! The entire process resulted in many people in Sydney losing their jobs without any result for the residents of Waverley.

These are gutless whinges. None of the "gripes" here are constructive, because none of you can do anything other than make ill informed complaints.
I have walked through the Friday market almost every week.
The new one is still expanding and needs more stallholders, but has some interesting stalls. If you want it to be better, encourage more businesses who make their own products to come, rather than just complain.
The previous market wasn't exactly fantastic.
There is no reason why stallholders at the previous market can't come to the new one, unless they are selling cheap imports.

I'm from South America and in the past they use to sell "chorizo rolls" & empanadas, something that my family really liked, after a while a new stall open with "empanadas" they were really fantastic but the new operstor didn't allowed it anymore so they need to go... WHY? Nobody in BJ sell any SA products and didn't make any business competition, I complanied to waverley council and was told that is up to "the Operator", HOPE A NEW "THE OPERATOR" COME TO BJ MARKETS!

Hi Anonymous, We were the people selling “Empanadas” in Bondi Junction. We just come across your post. Thank you for your comments and we are happy that you (and several other people) enjoy our fresh South American pastries, something that we are proud of.
The BJ “operator” apparently doesn’t like South American food/people and regarding Waverley Council they state that want to promote “Multiculturalism” but which one? As you said in Bondi Junction Market aren’t any South American food and are not allowed anymore.
