Graffiti – Disgrace
I missed the precinct meeting last night to raise my concern.
My question is, do we have any pride and why is the council not leading by example.
There seems to be an increasing amount of graffiti on walls, homes, building and public property.
An example is those dreaded parking meters. Those new parking meters in Campbell Parade, Wairoa Avenue, Gould Street etc have been covered in graffiti for months.
It seems quite ironic that the council provides residents with advice on their website in how to remove graffiti and that the best form of prevention is rapid removal.
Why hasn’t council removed the graffiti?
The simple solution is for council to lead by example and clean up our streets. Better solution is to pull meters out.
Concerned resident of Wallis Parade.

Yeah add Hall and Curlewis st as well and all the posts have graffiti on them as well !
I agree, some of those meters have had graffiti on them for months.
Who in council is responsible for this and why aren't they cleaned?
The policy is to clean offensive Graffiti within 24 hours. I guess the policy for the meters is don't bother
I live in Grafton street where not only the meters have graffiti and dont stand straight but the wall on Syd einfeld drive has a large red spray job on it. great welcome to waverley!
And if the kids were caught?
If Waverley council is responsible for cleaning graffiti - who is responsible and why haven't they done so?
If it's a private company responsible for cleaning graffiti why aren't they being held accountable?
It would be nice to hear council's views on this.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained, Graffiti on at least 60 meters (I have nothing better to do) nothing fixed. Council please remove the Graffiti policy if you cannot adhere to it.
Must Fix Sally!
add chambers and consett avenues to the list
Council removes graffiti in accordance with its policy which states that in high profile areas, graffiti will be removed within 48 hours from notification and all other areas or routine areas within 20 working days of notification. Graffiti surveillance occurs at least twice weekly for high profile areas and monthly for routine areas.
Council is restricted from graffiti removal in some areas as a result of ownership or contractual obligations associated with other entities. Syd Einfeld Drive and its associated infrastructure is owned and managed by the RTA. They have their own graffiti removal maintenance teams and Council is not allowed to remove graffiti from their infrastructure. We do however report incidences of graffiti to the RTA as staff become aware of them or as we are notified by the public.
We agree that graffiti is unfortunately a prolific problem on parking meters, especially on those at the southern end of Bondi Beach. Meter cleaning and maintenance is carried out quarterly by a contractor as part of meter warranty arrangements. Individual meters are also cleaned by the contractor on request, especially when there has been an episode of extensive vandalism. However, regrettably, Council’s contractor can remove the graffiti one day, only for it to be immediately replaced the next day, and the cost to continually clean individual meters in these instances is considerable.
The next scheduled cleaning of all parking meters within the Waverley Local Government Areas is due to start from Wednesday 28 September 09.
Cr Sally Betts
Cr Betts,
Thank you for your considered response and taking action. I have noticed Syd Einfeld has been cleaned and the meters are to be cleaned. One small point with your contractor it has been more than three months as the Graffiti was the same.
Congrats on being Mayor again
Cr Betts, how long does it take to clean these eye-sores. I live in North Bondi and those yucky parking meteres in Glenayr, Wairoa, Beach, Campbell Pde, Warners to namea few streets and I am sure the rest as well have not been touched. It is now the 12th October!!
There are enough kids wandering around the beach, give them the contract and they can go to Bunnings and buy some cleaner. At the same time they can get some WD-40 as the machines are rusting away.
Better still take the money grabbing $5 an hour meters out!!! Then the problem goes away forever.
If you live in Bondi you should get a Parking pass for the year, at a price. For the whole area.Residents stickers are useless, people Park on your street and you end up having to Park streets away, then there is a chance of getting a ticket.Councils need to think Paring through in every area.
Yes yes I know its bit of extra work.
I also agree with the sale of Woollahra council buildings, its a very good idea and the money which will be in the 100 million area will be well used building or converting a new building.Stinulates the economy.
Sally Betts, read your response. it has now been one month and those rust buckets in Wairoa still have the graffiti on them!!!!!!!
Have you noticed, Glebe, Kings Cross and numerous other areas have nice hanging baskets on the lamp posts. No much effort but it does look very nice.
Waverley and Woollahra should take a look, and do something similar.
Agree with the idea of flowers. But Wairoa ave meters must be our council's idea of having colour courtesy of grafitti experts. Glad to see nathan rees want to be tough on them.
Sally it is now one and half months since you said all the meters would be cleaned.
Check out the one outside Ploy Thai. Besides the graffiti it looks completely rusted through.
what happened to the three monthly cleaning Sally. Next time you go to Speedo dont lean on the meter it is so rusted it will fall over
