Dangerous footpath on Belmore Road - right near major Hospital

I walk every day over a strip of extremely poorly maintained footpath on Belmore Road. It seems like a piece of "temporary solution" that has been there just about forever. This is from the corner of High Street on the western side of Belmore Road and continues down to the next northern intersection on Arthur Street.

My concern is that this is a very high traffic area not just for Randwick residents but for people who are visiting the Hospital - usually sick, unwell, elderly, families, frail, people in wheelchairs, on crutches or with other types of walking aides. Why should they have to put up with this kind of facility in a wealthy eastern suburbs area, right near a major Sydney teaching hospital? The bus stop near the corner of Arthur Street and Belmore Road is particularly hazardous.

The council needs to address this urgently - and supply the best level walking footpath available. Proper paving should be council priority.

I myself have a foot injury and have hurt myself several times in the past 6 months walking along that strip - just a simple thing like a twisted ankle can make life misery if you have other injuries or illnesses to cope with.

Please don't delay. I have considered taking a petition to council and will be resorting to that option soon if we cannot see improvement here. I will talk to hospital and university staff and students, as well as business owners and shopkeepers to canvas support if we cannot get something done soon.

Many thanks for your speedy attention,

Mary

Mary and others will be pleased to know that the sections of footpath she refers to, between Arthur Street and High Street on the western side of Belmore Road, and between High Street and Short Street on the eastern side, have been included for major restoration in the 2009/10 Draft Budget, currently on public exhibition for comment. The proposed paving will be identical to that used around High Cross Park, Havelock Ave and Alison Park.

That's good to now. I will try to get a look at the plans too. Does that ensure they will be done though?

STILL not fixed. Just about a year later and nearing the end of the 209/10 financial year. Nothing changes for the elderly and sick who have to use this footpath every day.
Now there is word that a building is to be demolished on that strip, which creates even more chaos.

:(

Yahoo! at LAST - more than 18months later . . . the paving is being done. Looks great and makes Randwick look decent at last!

Thanks.
